The 6 Awkward Thoughts Everyone Has During a Massage (And Why Your Therapist Doesn’t Care)

Picture this: You’ve finally done it. You booked the massage. You walked into the spa, inhaled that heavenly eucalyptus-infused air, and now you’re lying under a crisp, warm sheet. The soft music is playing. The lighting is perfect. You are officially in the relaxation zone.

Except, your brain didn't get the memo.

Instead of melting into the table, your mind starts racing at 100 miles per hour, analyzing every single movement, sound, and breath. If you’ve ever found yourself overthinking on the massage table, don’t worry—you are definitely not alone.

Here are the six most common awkward thoughts everyone has during a massage, paired with a little reality check from behind the scenes.

1. “Am I breathing too loud? How do humans breathe normally?!”

Suddenly, the simple act of inhaling and exhaling feels like a performance. You become acutely aware of how quiet the room is, and you start wondering if your deep relaxation breaths sound like a deflating balloon or a startled grizzly bear.

  • The Reality Check: Trust us, we want to hear you breathe! Deep, heavy breathing is the ultimate compliment to a massage therapist. It tells us that your nervous system is finally switching from "fight-or-flight" mode into "rest-and-digest" mode. Breathe away.

2. “Oh no... I forgot to shave my legs.”

You’re on the table, the therapist starts working on your calves, and a wave of panic hits you. Did I shave this morning? Is it prickly? Are they judging my stubble right now?

  • The Reality Check: We couldn’t care less about hair. Seriously. Massage therapists see dozens of legs a week—shaved, unshaved, hairy, smooth, tattooed, pale, tanned—and we do not judge any of them. We are focusing on your muscle attachments and fascia, not your grooming habits.

3. GURGLE. “Please, stomach, do not make that noise again.”

It always happens during the quietest moment of the session. Your stomach lets out a massive, echoing growl that sounds like a subterranean earthquake. You freeze, praying your therapist thinks it was a car driving by outside.

  • The Reality Check: A rumbling stomach is actually scientific proof that the massage is working! When your body relaxes, blood flow increases to your digestive system. To a therapist, a loud stomach gurgle is the equivalent of a 5-star review. It means you are deeply relaxed.

4. “Where do I put my arms when I’m face up?”

When you're face down, your arms go on the armrests or at your sides. Easy. But the moment you flip over, a sudden crisis of geometry occurs. Do I rest them on my stomach like a mummy? Do I leave them at my sides like a soldier? Are my fingers twitching?

  • The Reality Check: Put them wherever they feel heaviest and most comfortable. On your stomach, flat on the table, or curled up near your chest—there is no wrong answer. If an arm is in the way, your therapist will gently move it for you. You don't have to do any of the work.

5. “Am I supposed to talk right now? Am I being rude?”

Your therapist asks how your day is going. You answer. Then, silence settles in. You start debating whether you should chat about the weather, ask them about their career, or just shut your eyes.

  • The Reality Check: This is your hour. If you want to vent about your boss, we are great listeners. If you want to zone out and not speak a single word for 60 minutes, that is our absolute favorite thing. Follow your mood. A professional therapist will always take your cue.

6. “Did I fall asleep? Did I snore? How long was I out?”

You blink, and suddenly the therapist is gently whispering that the session is over. You have no idea if it’s been five minutes or five hours, and you have a sneaking suspicion you might have let out a little snort.

  • The Reality Check: Sleep away! Time dilation is totally normal during a great massage. If you snored, it just means we did our job perfectly.

Leave the Overthinking at the Door

The moral of the story? Your body is doing exactly what it's supposed to do, and your massage therapist has heard and seen it all before. There is nothing to be embarrassed about, no test to pass, and no "correct" way to sit on the table.

Your only job is to lie down, let go, and let us take care of the rest.
